Randers is a city found on the Jutland peninsula in Denmark. It is the 6th biggest city of the country. The city had its beginnings near the River Gudenaa and had since become significant as a merchant region.                                Randers History is a complete picture of the struggles and victories of the city.

Randers History – Institution of the Town

It was during the 12th century that the town of Randers was officially established. However, there are evidences which prove that the town was already inhabited during the time of the Vikings.

Before Randers was established as a town, peasants who were against Canute IV of Denmark and his plans to strike England and its sovereign came together and rallied here. This mutiny led to the death of the Danish monarch.

Randers History – The Middle Ages

During most of The Middle Ages, Randers was surrounded with fortifications to defend the town from foreign invaders. In the 13th century, the town was damaged three times due to a fire. One of this fires occurred in 1246 when Abel of Denmark burned down the town during the civil revolt in opposition to Eric IV of Denmark.

On April 1, 1340, the national hero Niels Ebbesen murdered Count Richard III of Holstein on the street near the Randers’ town center. This incident led to more uprisings against the Germans, who at that time ruled over Denmark. Picture of Niels Ebbeseb and the building wgere he killed Count Richard III, thw window is a;ways open

In 1350, King Valdemar IV of Denmark made an effort to bring together a government. Randers was then strengthened with protection. Unfortunately, the town was captured by Valdemar’s forces in 1359.

Randers History – 16th Century to the 20th Century

Farmers who had an uprising tried to occupy the town in 1534 but they were unsuccessful. After this, Randers slowly gained fame due to a rise in the number of merchants in the area. Estates were built and a large number of navy sailed from the town to a lot of places in the world.

At around 1890, Randers was known for manufacturing gloves and producing salmon and rope. Many harbors were constructed in the city with some good shipyards. Randers became significant not just in commerce but in military affairs as well. The city could accommodate about 10,000 to 15,000 men.

Randers History – The 21st Century

For approximately a century, Randers was governed mostly by Social Democrats. However, this changed in 2002 when Michael Aastrup Jensen, a member of the Liberal Party, took over the local government. The rule of the Liberalists was short lived as the local government of Randers in 2007 once again fell in the hands of the Social Democrats.

The things that happened throughout Randers History depict the beautiful beginnings of the city.
